Confirmation Curriculum

January 14th, 2010 No Comments

Here are a few options to look at for curriculum for your confirmation class:

Credo: This is the newest UMC curriculum set.  Credo is a confirmation program that is not your conventional classroom experience! It brings worship, Sunday school, Bible study, service, and church ministries into confirmation. Credo is designed to be used in virtually any church and in a wide variety of schedules.  Check out the Facebook page.  Click here for an online review.

Re:Form:  Several of our churches report a great experience using this new curriculum from Augsburg Press.  It takes a little effort to add in our Wesley and United Methodist History and heritage, but those using it say the youth really relate through the guided experience.  Check out the Facebook page.

Claim the Name: Claim the Name offers a number of class design options, from 6-15 session to a 37 session facilitator guide.  You can separately purchase mentor guides, parent books, and student books to complement the class experience.

.

Making Disciples: Making Disciples, written by Bishop Will Willimon, is a mentor-based confirmation program that pairs confirmands with adult mentors and guides them through a variety of learning experiences that will strengthen the student’s understanding of the faith while connecting him or her with the community of believers in a personal way. It can be used as a stand-alone program, or in conjunction with your current curriculum as a special experiential unit.

Curriculum or Program Resources

EMerge - A Cokesbury program that has had some good reviews from youth workers I know.

Veracity Videos - Another Cokesbury curriculum that is attached to the confirmation and Claim the Life education series

Trigger - A newer Youth Specialties/Zondervan resource that is edgy.

You Teach - If you’ve ever encountered the Skit Guys, this series uses their skit humor as discussion starters.

Nooma - Most popular and effective with older youth, these videos by Rob Bell are essentially sermons in video form.  It can be expensive to buy the whole set, but one idea shared with me recently is to invite congregation members to give a new Nooma video to the youth program as a Christmas gift.  They run about $10 for each video.
